Advice - Repotting

Do I have to change my bonsai’s soil?
Yes! This is called repotting. It is generally done in the spring every 2 or 3 years depending on how vigorous the species is. The goal is to replenish degraded soil, and prune the roots at the same time.
How do I choose a new pot for my bonsai?
Bonsais are frequently repotted in the same pot. However, if it has grown a lot or if you want it to grow or if you just want a different colour or shape of pot, you should choose one that is slightly bigger (3 to 5 cm).
What do I need to repot my bonsai?

You need a substrate that fits the needs of the species, a drainage tray, wire (for fastening the plant to the pot), chopsticks for tamping down the soil, a chisel or cutters for trimming excess roots, and water for a good soaking afterwards. And, if you so choose, you’ll need a new pot.

What substrates should I use for my bonsai?
You need a substrate that drains well, that is, one that is made up of small grains. Soil by itself is really not the best option. Professionally, we have chosen to use Japanese soils that give the best results.
