The most known species is the Fagus sylvatica, capable to reach 30 to 40 m of height. His/her/its trunk is gray, smooth. The leaves of 5 to 10 cm, are smooth, green, brilliant and veined. They turn to the brown to the fall not to fall contrary to those of the majority of the deciduous trees (marcescence). The buds of spring are long, let's laugh and pointed. The Fagus sylvatica covers more than 10% of the French forest. His/her/its compact wood, resistant to the humidity, is used everywhere that it is in joinery or woodwork. |
