The Gardena variety, from the madder family, also called kushinani in Japanese is a beautiful shrub with shiny green evergreen foliage. It will require to be protected from frost in a cold greenhouse or in a non-heated room. After flowering, the Japanese variety gets some orange-toned fruits that remain until late in fall, unique character of this plant (see the last picture). The creamy white, ivory, or even softly pink-colored flowers have a smooth and very specific perfume that is really sought-after. The intense flowering goes on from June to September. Once, people used to cultivate gardenia to get cut flowers or to make buttonhole decorations. The gardenias are cold greenhouses or orange groves plants. In a pot, it is essential to protect it from frost. The main interest of this species is its splendid perfumed flowering. Photographed in August 2022. Shelf not included. |
